"You're a Damn Good Cop, Jim Gordon" is the sixth episode of the first season of Harley Quinn. It is the sixth episode of the series overall. It was released on January 3, 2020, on DC Universe.

Synopsis[]

When Clayface loses his arm in a heist, it turns out to be not only evidence for Jim Gordon, but also a key witness against Harley and her crew.

Plot[]

Harley is aggravated that stealing King Tut's corpse still hasn’t earned her a nomination into the Legion of Doom, and her temper grows by KGBeast being nominated. At King Shark's off-hand suggestion of stealing more computers, Harley sets her sights on robbing WayneTech, Bruce Wayne's tech corporation. They initially go to steal an invisible bike, but Harley goes further and steals a more tantalizing mystery device. The spontaneous change calls for a spontaneous escape, in which Clayface's arm gets severed.

Batman responds to Jim Gordon summoning him with the Bat Signal, but realizes Gordon wants to talk to someone about his marital problems. For this misuse of the signal, Batman dismantles it and leaves Gordon Clayface's arm to interrogate for the WayneTech break-in. Batman coldly muses that Jim "used to" be a "damn good cop."

Harley checks the news regarding the WayneTech heist, only to find a high-profile evil blogger, the Cowled Critic, trashing her for "leaving behind" crew members. Also, Poison Ivy and Doctor Psycho are supposedly in a relationship after Ivy caught Psycho during his fall.

Gordon, meanwhile, is busy interrogating a child-like version of Clayface personified in the severed arm. He rambles about his marriage, but the hand gladly listens without judgment. Harley, Clayface, and King Shark prepare to break into the police department to regain the hand, while Psycho and Ivy hunt down the Cowled Critic. At the same time, Gordon becomes genuinely friendly with Clayface's hand for listening to his troubles.

Harley's initial attempt to gain entry fails when King Shark is tranquilized the moment he sets foot in the police station, beaten up, and taken to prison. Clayface gets away by transforming into a cop and successfully serves as the decoy instead. Atop the building, Harley and Clayface find Gordon, who refuses to surrender his hand, his new friend.

Ivy and Psycho the Cowled Critic's address: a house occupied by Psycho's ex-wife, her new boyfriend, and Psycho's son, Herman. Herman is revealed to be the Cowled Critic.

Back with Gordon, Harley threatens to press the button on the mystery device she stole from Wayne Tech if Gordon doesn’t release the arm. Gordon shoots his gun anyway, prompting her to press it. This instantly teleports her to the Batcave, where Batman is sorely tempted to let her fall from a stalactite. Harley calls out his selfishness in putting his work before friendship and realizes she is describing herself as being fixated on her goals over Clayface’s arm. She convinces Batman to go after Gordon and reconcile.

Reconciled

Doctor Psycho reconciles with Herman

Again, with Psycho, Herman berates his dad for trapping him in the basement, killing all his friends, and even for naming him "Herman." Psycho says this abuse was to mold Herman into a great supervillain and assesses Herman has indeed become "more evil than I could have dreamed." Herman is overjoyed to have his father's pride; the father and son embrace, exchanging tearful "I hate yous".

Batman and Harley arrive atop the police station; Batman apologizes to Gordon for his harsh words and restores the Bat Signal. With his old friend back, Gordon allows The Arm to be reabsorbed by Clayface. Batman immediately tries to apprehend Harley, but she throws the teleportation device at him, zapping him back to the Batcave. Psycho arrives and disarms the police, attempting to arrest her.

Back home, Harley's group watches the Cowled Critic retract his previous review of them and deem Harley a good material for the Legion of Doom...if only she could stop leaving crew members behind. Harley realizes she left King Shark in prison and breaks him out, finding him in fine spirits.

Trivia[]

  • Harley mentions Furious 7 when Doctor Psycho drives across a skyscraper to another one, referencing a similar scene from that movie.
  • Clayface tracking down his lost and independent arm is quite similar to an episode of Batman: The Animated Series where that version of Clayface created a little girl from himself, intending to have her act as a scout to see if he could come out of hiding. She went rogue and befriended Robin, forcing Clayface to track her down and reabsorb her.
  • One of the prisoners at the end has the number 011285. That’s the day of the giant squid attack on New York from Watchmen, another DC property.

Goof/error[]

  • Throughout most of the episode, when the bottom of Harley Quinn's shoes appear, they come with the footstep pattern on them (which they have been seen previously on A High Bar), even though a few scenes do have them with blank red and black soles.
