Nora Freeze

Nora Freeze is a recurring character of the T.V. series, Harley Quinn. She is the widow of the late Mister Freeze, a member of the Cobb Squad and currently works at the Legion of Doom as Poison Ivy's personal assistant.

Nora is shown to be a Caucasian woman with pale white skin, long white hair, light blue eyes, and blue lipstick. Her attire is shown to be a blue headband, a long blue dress, and low blue heels.

Biography[]

Background[]

Nora Jacobsen^[1] ran a mom-and-pop cryogenics lab when she met Victor Fries who was the CEO of a multinational corporation tasked with crushing all competitors, including her lab. However, they met online and fell in love before he realized that she was the same person he was competing with. They married, but soon Nora fell ill with a rare blood disease that threatened to kill her. Seeing no other option, Victor Fries froze her in a block of ice to halt the progress of the disease, and then set out to find a cure, turning to a life of crime to fund his research.^[2] She remained frozen for 25 years.^[3]

Season 2[]

"Thawing Hearts"[]

After capturing and freezing Harley Quinn and her crew, Mister Freeze explained that he was planning to use Harley as a human subject to test his cure for Nora. To save herself, Harley informed him that her friend Poison Ivy was a "genius biochemist" and could possibly find a cure for her. However, after seeing Nora frozen in ice and observing Freeze's strange behavior, Harley assumed that he had frozen Nora after she tried to leave him and then made up her disease as an excuse to justify it. Harley then defrosted her body and broke Freeze's gun, only to learn that Nora was dying and Freeze was telling the truth.

Harley called in Ivy who found a solution to cure Nora, at the cost of Freeze's life, who sacrificed himself to cure her via blood transfusion. Before he died, he implored his wife to go on and enjoy her life. He reached out to his wife but weakened and faded away just before he could touch her. Crying over her husband's dead body, Nora screamed at Harley and her crew to leave.

NoraxZeus — Nora hooks up with Maxie Zeus

Nora was present at Ivy's bachelorette party at Themyscira. At the start of the trip, Nora confronted Harley about her invitation as she assumed she was only a pity invite because she killed her husband, with Harley insisting that he technically "killed himself". The highlight of the trip came when they went to Hedonikka, a neighboring island that seemingly mostly consisted of a male strip-club. While there, Nora started making out with Maxie Zeus (much to Catwoman's horror).

The day after, Harley presented her plan to kill Eris, who had taken over Themyscira from the amazons, with Nora being completely on board. Nora then helped attack the amazons and also tried to close the window that Eris was talking to Lex Luthor on using the computer. Later that night, Queen Hippolyta threw a party for "The Cobb Squad", after they saved her, with Nora seen dancing by the fire. By the end of the trip, she takes Zeus home with her, pulling him into her car were they start having sex.

"Something Borrowed, Something Green"[]

At Ivy and Kite Man's wedding, Nora was being photographed alongside the other bridesmaids but was surprised to see Harley after Ivy's infidelity with her was revealed. During the wedding, Jim Gordon put his plan into action and Nora was knocked out by the gas along with all the other guests. Harley then stopped the police officers and the ceremony turned to chaos as the villains started attacking the GCPD with Nora seen kissing Maxie Zeus during the brawl between the villains and the GCPD.

Nora attended the 83rd Annual Villy Awards where she was first seen stood outside, talking to Cheetah before the ceremony started. At the award ceremony she shared a table with Doctor Trap, Captain Cold, Black Manta and General Zod and was later seen having a drink with Livewire at the bar.

Enter Nora Freeze — Nora's new "party girl" look

After making plans two months prior with Harley and Ivy to hang out, she texted Harley saying she was coming over. Nora then arrived noisily at Catwoman's Apartment with her driver, both high on cocaine as she was now a party girl. While Nora entertained herself with help from her driver, Ivy was worrying about Frank the Plant, who had been kidnapped, and mentioned that hypothetically, the plant empath Swamp Thing could help, however, she and him had had a falling out. Nora then offered to extort Swamp Thing by freezing him, with Ivy admitting that wasn't a bad idea and they all decided to go to New Orleans to find him.

Nora Flashes People — Nora at the airport

Nora, Harley and Ivy soon departed for New Orleans, with Nora flashing the people at the airport. At a bar in New Orleans, Nora got bored as she was looking for sex and no one there seemed to be interested in her. The warlock John Constantine offered to direct Ivy to Swamp Thing if she could outdrink him, after overhearing their conversation. With the alternative being talking about her feelings like Nora (who said she wished she had friends like Ivy was to Frank), Ivy begrudgingly accepted Constantine’s challenge. However, Nora outdrank all of them, getting directions to Swamp Thing, and made it to his swamp by herself.

The next morning, she phoned the hungover Harley and Ivy who were still passed out on the floor of the bar, telling them to swipe Constantine's map. While phoning Harley and Ivy, she met Swamp Thing and the pair ended up having sex at his hut. After Harley and Ivy arrived at Swamp Thing’s hut, Ivy tasked Nora with using her relationship to recruit Swamp Thing’s help with finding Frank, but Nora got sidetracked and they all ended up going out for beignets.

While waiting at a beignet truck, Nora denied that Swamp Thing was her boyfriend. Severely hurt, Swamp Thing’s emotions kicked up a hurricane-like storm. Nora and Harley were then caught by Swamp Thing's vines, after Ivy told him to muffle his “tantrum”, but Swamp Thing snapped that Ivy was selfish and had been a bad friend for never letting him express himself. Nora listened as Ivy spoke to Swamp Thing about what was going on and broke down in tears. As Swamp Thing was moved by Ivy’s vulnerability, he ceases his rampage and freed Harley but left Nora hanging in the air for awhile until he finally het her go.

Later, back at Swamp Thing's hut, Nora discerned that she could slowly find her way back into how she was prior to her husband's death, and thanked Ivy and Harley before leaving.

"The Horse and the Sparrow"[]

Nora attended the premiere of James Gunn's A Hard Wayne's Gonna Fall at the Monarch Theatre, with Swamp Thing, showing that their relationship has continued. They were first seen by the red carpet seeing all the guest arriving outside the theatre. Later, they were seen in their seats inside the theatre where they were spotted by the Joker who commented on them being an item and saying he loved it. She last seen in her seat when the credits for the movie were rolling.

Nora was at the Legion of Doom to collect her widow's benefits check when she ran into Poison Ivy in the executive women's restroom. As Ivy began complaining about her job as the new CEO of the Legion, they were interrupted by Snowflame causing Nora to angrily insult and attack him til he left. She then quickly turned around, telling Ivy to stop wallowing and insisting she didn't need to be cool but that she was Poison Ivy and could do whatever she wanted with the Legion. Empowered by Nora's speech, Ivy asked Nora to be her assistant. Although she initially declined, Ivy threatened to change the locks on the restroom causing her to change her mind. Later, Nora stood by Ivy's side as she called the Legion member's to a meeting, asserting her dominance by burning all their plans and schemes and declaring they would only work on her plans from now on work on her plans. She cheered Ivy on after the members turned on her and a fight broke out which Ivy easily won.

"B.I.T.C.H."[]

As Ivy was interviewed by Tawny Young, Nora ushered Harley away when she was attempting to get Ivy's attention, stating she was not visiting with spectators. Although Harley tried to persuade her pointing out their friendship, Nora put up a Mama Macaroni takeout menu, claiming she was not on "the list". Later, Nora was sat at her desk browsing a dating app when Ivy asked her to call the company and get her broken pasta-maker fixed. She reluctantly agreed with a sign. Soon after, Bane came by to talk to her, accidentally knocking over her desk when he sat on it, and seeing an opportunity Nora flirted with him, saying she needed to strong man's help to which he readily offered his assistance.

She later stood by Ivy's side as she briefed the villain on their latest plan and told Ivy the mayor would not approve her tree removal permits due to hating her. Later, as all the members stood up to leave, King Shark introduced himself, explaining he was expecting 9 babies and adding he loved party. As all the members ignored him, Nora relented stating she would throw him a baby shower. Seeing Bane through the window, Nora realized she could use him once again. Later, as the baby shower which had been completely prepared by Bane, Nora got flirted on by Captain Cold, meanwhile, Bane who had been forced to rush out watched sadly from a window.

"Icons Only"[]

While on vacation in Vegas, Ivy video called Nora asking her to get her and Harley tickets for Clayface's show although Nora told her that she could get "backstage with Céline" and "Meet-and greet with Britney" but nothing for Clayface. She urged Ivy to just ask him instead but she refused, telling Nora to keep trying.

As Nora was driving Ivy to the launch of the rocket taking her to the conference on the moon, she warned Ivy to avoid everyone from Thanagrad as she claimed they all had chlamydia. Nora listened skeptically as Ivy denied the risks of getting the illness and then handed her a business card for doctor Hugo Strange just in case. Arriving on the site, Nora and Ivy laughed and made fun of the rocket looking like a giant penis. Nora snapped some pictures of Ivy posing next to it before she took off.

Having found his resume taped to a dart board at Noonan's Bar, Nora called up Jim Gordon, offering him a job as security guard at the Legion of Doom which he readily accepted. She was sat at her desk when Poison Ivy returned from the moon, presenting her with gift sent by other villains. She later showed Gordon around the facilities, stopping to view her favorite spot: the kitchen as that was where she refilled her coffee. When Terra, Volcana and Tefé Holland walked by, she introduced them to Gordon as Ivy's mentees. As they passed by, Tefé attempted to take a snack bag but Nora told them they only got one bag a day, asserting they would not get any special treatment "just because I boinked your bog dad", making Tefé groan and telling her to stop bringing that up.

"Metamorphosis"[]

Nora and Captain Cold were in the kitchen at the Hall of Doom, overtly flirting when they were interrupted by King Shark. She tried to get him to leave, then when he expressed his joy at the L.O.D.'s childcare program, she revealed they did not have one as she had made sure of that. She later took part in the celebrations of Nightwing's death at the bottom floor, when a grief-stricken Batgirl began attacking the members although remained in the sideline. She cheered and chanted when Joker arrived, revealing he had murdered Nightwing and was returning to evil.

Nora burst into the L.O.D. conference room while Ivy was briefing the Natural Disasters, dramatically yelling at them to shut up as she had news. She then announced she was starving, asking what they are doing for lunch, offending both Volcana and Tefé in the process by complaining about their usual suggestions (or lack thereof). Before anyone had a chance to have an input she exclaims "screw you, I'm ordering gyros" before casually mentioning the transport of the Time Sphere (which the team were planning to steal) had been moved up to right now. Ivy and the others ran off while an upset Nora screamed after them that she would not pay the delivery fees by herself.

Later, Nora was sat at her desk, wearing a red wig to resemble Ivy (as she was expecting the IRS sometime that week and wanted to throw them off their game) when Harley Quinn walked in, demanding to see Ivy. Nora explained she had an hard-out until relenting and suggesting "a 4:00am hallway walk-and-talk on Tuesday" then 5:00 am as the first one got booked making Harley more and more frustrated. Harley began shaking Nora, demanding to know where Ivy was but Nora just stared at her and took another bite of her gyro. Harley then stapled her hair to the desk although Nora remained unimpressed, continuing eating as Harley ran off, having been alerted to Ivy's location by an explosion.

Nora was by Ivy’s side as she was compiling a list of LexCorp board members to get on side in order to vote Lex off as CEO (as a means to gain control of LexCorp and turn off Lex’s Earth Saver and get the sun back) with the help from Talia al Ghul. She later accompanied Ivy to Gotham's Annual Celebrity Golf Game where she was going to suck up to the man who would assure her the last vote she needed: Clegg.

Nora seems to have truly loved her late husband, being thrilled to see him and assuming he had found a cure to her disease after being taken out of her frozen state and being devastated after he sacrificed his life to save her. She was seemingly brought out of her depression during Ivy's bachelorette party, finding joy in life once more. Due to having spent 25 years frozen, Nora wanted to make the most of life, becoming more flirtatious and showing a great sexual desire, having flings with several men after just meeting them. She also becomes fixated on partying and drinking with the goal of living every day of her life at its best. She lacks filters, saying whatever comes to her mind and even flashing a crowd of people her bare breast when arriving in New Orleans.

Despite this, she is shown to care for her friends, as seen when following the plan of forcing John Constantine to give her the location of Swamp Thing so he can help Ivy to find Frank and even arriving to that place before Ivy and Harley. After her adventure with in New Orleans, she is shown to calm down a bit, finding a happy medium between her old and new selves. In season 4, Nora seems to have finally become emotionally balanced and even gives some advice to Ivy about how to be the CEO. After becoming Ivy's personal assistant, Nora shows to be very confident with a good self-esteem, she is also very loyal to Ivy which is seen when she does her best to cover up Ivy's "abscense" after she went by accident to the future for almost a week and defending the Legion of Doom HQ from the attack of Lex Luthor.

Trivia[]

Nora has consistently been credited under the name of "Nora Freeze" instead of "Nora Fries" which is the way her name is usually spelled in other continuities.
Like her 1992 incarnation, Nora was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and Mister Freeze attempts to find a cure for her. Her history of illness in TV and comics, however, is envisioned differently: Either being neurological, bloodborne, lung cancer, or heart disease contracted via genetics or external means.
Nora and Swamp Thing's mutual attraction may be a reference to Swamp Thing's romance with Abby Holland in the comics. Like Nora, she is known to have long white hair.
In "It's a Swamp Thing", Harley says Nora was frozen for 25 years. Assuming this is not an exaggeration, this would mean she's at least in her early forties. However, her age would presumably be persevered at the age at which she was frozen.
This is the only iteration of the character to have a character arc outside of her relationship with her husband.
