Blackgate Penitentiary is the primary penitentiary in which the sane criminals of Gotham City are incarcerated, whereas criminally insane individuals are usually housed at Arkham Asylum.
History[]
It makes its first appearance in "You're a Damn Good Cop, Jim Gordon" when King Shark gets sent there while trying to infiltrate Gotham City Police Department. He is later broken out by Harley Quinn.
In "The Horse and the Sparrow", the new Mayor, Joker, arrested Bruce Wayne for tax evasion and he was taken to Blackgate. Batgirl offered to help him break out before he was transported but he declined, stating he needed to take responsibility.
In "Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine's Day Special", Catwoman secretly delivered a box of chocolates to the prison for Bruce for Valentine's day.
In "Gotham's Hottest Hotties", Bruce Wayne's son Damian and butler Alfred Pennyworth come to visit him although are informed by Alvin, his pedal butler that they would not be able to visit him at that time as his DJ lessons were running a bit long and they had a financial call with the C.F.O. of Wayne Enterprises coming up, revealing he was living it up in prison and even able to run his company while serving time.
In "B.I.T.C.H.", it was revealed that Blackgate only housed rich criminals like Bruce Wayne, while the rest of criminals housed at Arkham Asylum, as mentioned by Victor Zsasz. This is likely a newer development, possibly following Joker's election as mayor and reformation of Arkham, as King Shark who was sent there in the past would not be considered wealthy.
In "Killer's Block", Bruce Wayne watched as Gotham was being destroyed from his cell, declaring Batman needed to return he made a call to his lawyer who promised to get him out by lunch. Meanwhile, Alfred Pennyworth, who had been desperate to be reunited with his master, had finally managed to land himself at Blackgate after failing before and being taken to Arkham and since building a toilet wine empire from the inside, earning his way to the top and then committing a crime worthy of Blackgate. However, as he is escorted there, he is shocked to see Bruce was just leaving.
